New Students to Hayes Middle School 2012-13

Please be advised that any new student & parents to the Grand Ledge School District for the 2012-13 school year interested in taking a tour of the building are invited to attend 1 session on June 5, 2012 with our Counselors. Sessions will run @ 9:00am or 1:00pm.

2012-2013 7th & 8th Girls Volleyball Tryout Information

7th and 8th Grade Volleyball Tryout Information Volleyball tryouts for the 2012 school year will start on Thursday, September 6th and will run through Tuesday, September 11th. The season starts immediately after tryouts and runs though the end of October. Students who make the team should plan to make a daily time commitment after school Monday-Friday until 6:00 pm on practice days and even later on game days. Games are played on Mondays and Wednesdays and practices are held on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Students will be provided transportation to “Away” games only; parents are responsible for providing transportation home from all games. STUDENTS MUST HAVE A PHYSICAL FORM ON FILE IN THE OFFICE IN ORDER TO TRY OUT FOR EITHER TEAM – NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE FOR ANY REASON! Sports Physicals May 30, 2012 @ High School ?Athletic Department Physicals offered for the 2012-2013 school year on May 30, 2012 from 6:00-8:00pm at the Grand Ledge High School Lower Gym (enter by the stairs/pool entrance). $25 CASH. All students trying out for a sport for the 2012-2013 school year, must have a physical card on file in the athletic office before practice begins. Physicals must be dated April 15, 2012 or after to be valid for this next school year. Students who do not take advantage of physicals being offered at school are responsible to make their own arrangements to have a physical and turn the card in to their coach or the athletic office prior to the first practice.
Interested athletes should report to the gym outfitted in appropriate clothing: Athletic shirt, athletic shorts, and gym shoes. Kneepads are NOT REQUIRED for tryouts but students who already own a pair of kneepads should wear them. Students are also encouraged to bring their own water bottle so time at the drinking fountains can be minimized. There will be a JOINT 7th and 8th grade tryout on the first two days of tryouts from 2:30-4:30. After that, 7th grade girls will try out from 2:30-4:15 pm and 8th grade girls will try out from 4:15-6:00 pm. All tryouts will be held in the Hayes Middle School Gym. Please fill out the registration form attached below and return it to your student’s bus driver or their main school office. Please do not ask for transportation Please return this form by May 16, 2012 to ensure your student is scheduled for bussing |

Next year all eighth grade students (this years seventh graders) will be enrolling in a full year World Language class for high school credit. All schools in Michigan are now required to have students complete two years in a World Language for high school graduation hence the reason for this opportunity. In order to properly plan for next year, students will be asked to select their first, second, and third choice language. The language options are Spanish, French, and German, which match the selections that are available at Grand Ledge High School. Please spend a few moments over the weekend going over the descriptions of these available languages, as your student will be giving us their preliminary choices next Tuesday during advisory. Thank you as always for being involved in your student’s education.
FOREIGN LANGUAGES FRENCH 1A Students will learn basic French so that they will be able to communicate with simple sentences by the end of the course. Students will learn grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. They will also learn cultural information about French-speaking countries. This trimester focuses on school, family & food vocabulary and cultural concepts relating to that vocabulary. The grammatical concepts include the present tense of regular –er verbs and some irregular verbs. Students will also have the opportunity to learn songs, perform skits, and listen to French music. FRENCH 1B Successful completion of French 1 A Students will learn basic French so that they will be able to communicate with simple sentences by the end of the course. Students will learn grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. They will also learn cultural information about French-speaking countries. This trimester focuses on food, clothing, & sport/activities vocabulary and cultural concepts relating to that vocabulary. The grammatical concepts include the present tense of regular –ir & -re verbs and some irregular verbs. We will also begin to look at the past tense of regular verbs. Students will also have the opportunity to learn songs, perform skits, and listen to French music. GERMAN 1A Students electing German 1 will be introduced to the language and culture of German-speaking countries. Students will learn to write and speak basic German while also experiencing cultural likes and differences. Listening, speaking, reading, comprehension, pronunciation and vocabulary will be stressed. Students will learn songs, perform skits and view cultural movies. Key Concepts: Vocabulary - Greetings, family, school weather, numbers Grammar Concepts - Present tense conjugation of regular/irregular verbs, definite/indefinite articles, nominative/accusative cases, formal/informal address, word order GERMAN 1B Successful Completion of German 1 A The second trimester of German 1 will focus on improving the basic language skills learned in 1A, while learning new vocabulary, verbs and word order. The students will gain cultural experiences through writing skits based on culturally relevant topics. Listening, speaking, reading comprehension, and pronunciation will continue to be stressed. Key Concepts: Vocabulary – foods, clothing, colors, house, hobbies Grammar Concepts – modal auxiliaries, future tense, stem change verbs, separable prefix verbs, possessive adjectives, accusative prepositions SPANISH 1A Text: Buen Viaje Level 1, Preliminary Chapter – Chapter 4 Students will begin to learn to speak, read and write the second language of the United States. Emphasis will be placed on communication. Major topics to be covered include present tense verbs, geography, Spanish in the United States, native groups of people. Students will also study vocabulary units related to descriptions of people, school subjects, shopping (clothing and school supplies) and times of the year. Students will learn this material through listening, writing, speaking and reading activities. Students will also learn about the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world through video clips, discussions and readings. SPANISH 1B Successful Completion of Spanish 1 A Text: Buen Viaje Level 1, Chapters 5 - 8 Students will continue learning how to speak, read and write in Spanish. Emphasis will be placed on communication. Major vocabulary units to be covered include family, sports, food, health and medicine. Specific grammar units to be covered include present tense verbs, the difference between ser and estar, in direct objects, and stem changing verbs. Students will learn about the cultures of Spanish-speaking countries though video clips, podcasts, discussions and readings. |
